The God of the Gaps hasn’t left my mind since I first heard it. A theory in which spirituality fills in the lapses left by science- by certainty; I am left wondering what fills in and forms around the gaps in my own life? The eldest daughter of a southern home, I utilize repetitive motions to explore the depths to which I am trapped in the same spaces as those before me. Through my creative practice I am able to understand how we occupy and change these spaces between the ephemeral and the immutable.
Traditionally relevant processes, such as weaving, represent a physicality to the generational ideas and expectations that have been woven into my identity. My processes allow me to burrow into these passed down ideas in order to understand and challenge them. Foragables and found objects familiar to my childhood unfurl memories, that can’t quite be grasped, as I am compelled by the world that once nourished me. The cyclical inevitability of nature and decay in parallel to the cycles of my life leads me to consider what is both rooted and exposed. Representational sculptures are sown throughout my work, mimicking fissures in memories and allowing space for healing, which is a non-linear journey reflected in the ebbs and flows of my interdisciplinary work.
